Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced infielder Michael Chavis will begin a rehab assignment with the Indianapolis Indians beginning tonight vs. St. Paul. He is the 11th MLB rehabber assigned to Indy this season, following position players Ka'ai Tom, Colin Moran, Phillip Evans, Ke'Bryan Hayes and Erik Gonzalez, and pitchers Chad Kuhl, Austin Davis, Luis Oviedo, Steven Brault and Sam Howard.
Chavis, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 31 (retroactive to Aug. 29) with a right elbow strain. He appeared in six games with Pittsburgh after being recalled from Indy on Aug. 23 and hit .364 (8-for-22) with a .591 slugging percentage and .954 OPS. In 37 big league games split between Boston and Pittsburgh, Chavis owns a .228 average (23-for-101) and 10 extra-base hits for the season.
Primarily a second baseman, Chavis was traded from Boston to Pittsburgh on July 30 in exchange for LHP Austin Davis. Chavis made his Pirates organization debut with Indianapolis on Aug. 4 (2) at Iowa and hit .246 (17-for-69) with five home runs in 17 games. On Aug. 10 vs. St. Paul, he hit a two-run walk- off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Chavis was selected by Boston as the 26th overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. He made his major league debut on April 20, 2019 at Tampa Bay. Indianapolis' MLB rehab assignments are presented by Franciscan Health.
