Daytona Tortugas News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - RHP Mac Sceroler retired the first 11 batters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the sixth, but the St. Lucie Mets rallied for three in that frame to knock off the Daytona Tortugas, 4-2, on Friday night at First Data Field.
Daytona (7-11, 42-41) jumped out to an early advantage in the fourth. RF Drew Mount (1-4, R, SO) singled to center with two out and then proceeded to swipe second base. C Mark Kolozsvary (1-4, 2B, RBI, SO) then poked a grounder down the third-base line. The ball deflected off the bag and into left field for a hit. Mount scored on the catcher's double to put the Tortugas ahead, 1-0.
In the top of the sixth, SS José GarcÃa (2-4, R, 2 2B) created a run by himself. The 21-year-old began the frame with a double into the gap in left-center and scooted to third on a ground out. Following a strikeout, a pitch squirted out of the catcher's mitt with Kolozsvary at the plate. GarcÃa got a tremendous jump and scored on the passed ball to extend Daytona's lead to two, 2-0.
However, things began to go awry in the bottom of the frame. SS Manny RodrÃguez (1-3, R) ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a pair of walks, the Tortugas made a pitching change.
With the bases loaded, C Mitch Ghelfi (1-3, 2 RBI, BB, SO) slapped a base-hit into center field. Two runs scored on the single to tie the game at two, while the go-ahead run advanced to third. 1B Jeremy Vásquez (0-3, RBI, SO) would put St. Lucie (11-7, 43-41) ahead, 3-2, with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Mets added one more insurance run in the eighth. CF Hansel Moreno (1-2, R) started the inning with a bunt single, moved to second on a ground out, and then crossed the dish on a single to right by 2B Carlos Cortés (1-3, R, RBI, BB).
It was a tough-luck loss - his second - for Sceroler (5.1 IP, H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO). The 24-year-old surrendered just the one hit and tied a season-best seven strikeouts during the performance.
Despite throwing his last pitch with his squad trailing, RHP Dedniel Núñez (6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 4 SO) collected his second victory for St. Lucie. RHP Ezequiel Zabaleta (1.0 IP, SO) worked a perfect ninth to accumulate his sixth save.
Daytona will try and get back in the series on Saturday, as RHP Austin Orewiler (5-6, 3.29 ERA) is projected to take the hill. St. Lucie is scheduled to counter with FSL All-Star - and the Mets' No. 24 prospect entering the season, according to Baseball America - RHP Tony Dibrell (6-4, 2.60 ERA).
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at First Data Field. Saturday evening's game can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Following the road trip, the Tortugas will return home on Friday, July 12, to initiate a three-contest set against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. It will be another edition of the franchise's Best Dressed Friday series with special military appreciation uniforms - recognizing all branches of the armed forces - set to be worn by Tortugas' players and coaches. The jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the weekend. In addition, it will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Kona Brewing at The Jack with buy-one, get-one Kona beer products and Bud Light from 5:30 p.m. until first pitch. Like all Friday night affairs, there will be a splendid Postgame Fireworks show following the final out.
Multi-game plans and single-game tickets are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
