PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - After being no-hit for the first five innings on Saturday, the St. Lucie Mets rallied to defeat the Daytona Tortugas 4-2 at First Data Field.
The Tortugas were enjoying a 2-0 lead with starting pitcher Mac Scerola rolling through five innings. The Mets put an end to that with a three-run sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
Manny Rodriguez singled to start the home sixth. It was the first hit for the Mets. Blake Tiberi and Carlos Cortes drew walks on eight straight balls from Scerola to load the bases. Scerola was removed in favor of Dauri Moreta, who surrendered a two-run single to Mitch Ghelfi that tied the game. The hit extended Ghelfi's hitting streak to seven in a row.
Jeremy Vasquez followed with a RBI sac fly to plate Cortes for a 3-2 lead.
Cortes gave the Mets an insurance run in the eighth when he singled home Hansel Moreno to put the Mets up 4-2.
Mets starter Dedniel Nunez hung tough to earn the win. He held the Tortugas to two runs (one earned) over six quality innings. He struck out four.
Thomas McIlraith chipped in with two scoreless innings of relief. He induced an inning-ending double play in the eighth to keep the Mets up by a run.
Ezequiel Zabaleta got his sixth save by pitching a perfect ninth.
The Mets won despite being outhit 9-4.
Scerola ended up taking the loss. He gave up three runs on just one hit in 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
