Columbus, OH - The Syracuse Mets picked up their third shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over the Columbus Clippers on Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park. With the win, the Mets finish their six-day road trip with a 4-2 record.
Syracuse (21-15) made the first offensive move in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Dilson Herrera hammered a ball over the left-field wall, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. The homer was Herrera's fourth of the season and marked the first hit for either team in the game.
The Mets extended the lead in the eighth. Grégor Blanco doubled to center field and moved to third on a groundout. Carlos Gómez followed with a single through the left side, scoring Blanco for a 2-0 Mets edge.
Columbus (20-15) struggled at the plate all game. Syracuse starting pitcher Corey Oswalt stymied the Clippers' offense. The right-hander was perfect through four innings and didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the sixth. In total, Oswalt pitched six innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight batters. Reliever Tim Peterson pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts, and Arquimedes Caminero threw a scoreless ninth inning to collect his eighth save of the season.
Syracuse is off on Monday before beginning a six-day homestand with the first game of a three-game series against the Louisville Bats on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
