St. Lucie Mets News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets rallied for a 6-4 win over the Florida Fire Frogs on Saturday night at Osceola County Stadium.
The Mets trailed 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. They showed great patience in the inning, drawing four walks. Raphael Gladu got the scoring started with a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit 2-1.
On the next pitch Jacob Zanon sliced a two-run single off of reliever Lukas Young to put the Mets ahead 3-2. Carlos Cortes followed with RBI single to make it 4-2
The Fire Frogs got a run back on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mets scored two insurance runs in the eighth. Mitch Ghelfi hit a sac fly to plate Cody Bohanek and Edgardo Fermin ripped a RBI single to bring home Matt Winaker for a 6-3 lead.
Florida's Jefrey Ramos hit a run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth, but Carlos Cortes made a perfect relay throw to third base to catch Ramos trying to stretch a triple. The out ended the inning.
Joe Cavallaro pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
Luis Avilan (elbow) made a major league rehab appearance out of the bullpen. The lefty pitched a scoreless sixth and was credited with the win. He did not give up a hit, walked one and struck out one while throwing 24 pitches.
The game was a struggle on the mound. The teams combined to walk 16 batters. Mets starting pitcher Kyle Wilson was ejected by first base umpire Tanner Dobson with one out in the third inning after a swing by Logan Brown was called a foul tip instead of a swinging strikeout.
Four Mets relievers - Marcel Renteria, Avilan, Jake Simon and Cavallaro - combined to hold the Fire Frogs to three runs over the final 6.2 innings.
Nick Meyer and Fermin each had two hits. Bohanek reached base four times on three walks and a hit-by-pitch, which was his league-leading 12th of the season.
Jeremy Vasquez went 1 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to six games.
Fire Frogs starter Matt Hartman was throwing a two-hit shutout with two outs in the seventh. He ended up allowing two runs on two hits with four walks in a no-decision.
Young took the loss. He allowed four runs and walked three while only recording one out.
The Mets (5-1, 37-35) and Fire Frogs (2-4, 27-45) conclude their series at Osceola County Stadium on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
