Among The MLS Leaders: Steve Jolley leads with two blocks... Mathis is tied for first in shots (16) and third overall in shots on goals (7) and corner kicks (13)...Tim Howard is second in saves (21) and catch/punches (24).
Mathis Scores First Goal of 2003: Clint Mathis scored his first goal this past Saturday night in the 2-1 home win over the Colorado Rapids at Giants Stadium. The score ended a 494-minute goal drought dating back to a second minute goal at Dallas on September 5, 2002 (3-1 win). The MetroStars are 18-0-2 (includes two playoff wins), whenever Mathis finds the back of the net.
Career Night for Ziadie: Jamaican international defender Craig Ziadie notched his first-ever goal and an MLS career-high three points during the 2-1 home win against the Rapids. He assisted on the Mathis goal (51') and scored unassisted (62') for the winner.
Nine Players Make Metro Debut: Defender/midfielder Tim Regan became the ninth player on the roster this season to make his Metro debut when he came on as a late substitute for Amado Guevara. The other players are Ricardo Clark, Joey DiGiamarino, Jacob LeBlanc, Mike Magee, Jaime Moreno, Eddie Pope, Chris Leitch, and Amado Guevara.
Heard in the News:
"It's a huge rush. I mean, I never scored before. I didn't know what to do (to celebrate) because I've never been in that situation before. Next time, I'll take my clothes off, or something." - Craig Ziadie in the Star Ledger on his first MLS goal.
"Timmy has saved this team many, many times. It's important for a team that when your goalie lets up a soft goal, the team says, 'Hey, he's bailed us out time and again, it's time to help him.' That was the feeling I got at halftime." - Bob Bradley in the Star Ledger on Tim Howard.
"It was unbelievable. If I would have missed that, it would have been ridiculous." Clint Mathis in the Star Ledger on Ziadie's assist. "It was one of those games he felt he was in one of his grooves. It was kind of prophetic." - Howard on Ziadie in the New York Daily News.
"You know, it's funny that it's there. We were messing around and he gave it to me on Friday, but it is pretty prophetic...or pathetic. One or the other." - Howard on Ziadie giving him an autograph card this past Friday, which the Metros goalkeeper posted in his locker (Cybersoccer.com).
