Phoenix Mercury News Release

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury today announced the team's schedule for their upcoming 2009 season. One of the eight original WNBA clubs, Phoenix begins its 13th season under the reigns of general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale and second year head coach Corey Gaines.

The Mercury's 34-game schedule runs from June 6 through Sept. 13 and includes three nationally televised games. ESPN2 will carry the Mercury's road games on June 23 at San Antonio and July 28 at Connecticut. The Mercury's last game of the season at home against the Los Angeles Sparks will also be broadcast on ESPN2.

"We're excited to offer the fans an action-packed schedule with 10 weekend games this season and reasonably priced tickets options," said Mercury President and COO Jay Parry. "With the season tipping off later this year, we expect even more families will be able to enjoy the season in its entirety with most schools being out of session."

For the eighth time in the last 10 seasons Phoenix will open its season at home, hosting conference rival San Antonio on Saturday, June 6 at 7 p.m. at US Airways Center. The Mercury ends its 2009 campaign hosting the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon.

"It's great to start the season at home, especially against San Antonio, which should be an intense match up," said Mercury All-star Diana Taurasi. "Our goal is to get back to the playoffs. We want it for this team and our fans, who are the best and most loyal in the league."

Phoenix plays two back-to-back sets in 2009 starting with an away-home set against Sacramento on June 12 and 13. Mercury plays its second back-to-back set on Sept. 1 and 2 at Detroit and Indiana respectively. The Mercury will also play three home-and-home sets this season against Sacramento twice (back-to-back, June 12 and 13, and July 11 at Sacramento, July 15 at Phoenix) and San Antonio (Aug. 13 at Phoenix, Aug. 15 at San Antonio). Phoenix will have just two road trips of three or more games, including a 10-day, five-game trip from July 26 through Aug. 4.

Phoenix, who owns the No. 5 pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft and the league's highest-scoring offense in each of the last three seasons, looks to return to the postseason in 2009 with its stars and Olympic gold medalists Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter.

As the professional sports team in the Valley with the most affordable lower-level seats, fans can enjoy 2009 Mercury games for just $10. Tickets are available now on phoenixmercury.com and by calling (602) 252-WNBA.
