
Detroit Shock Scheduled To Tip Off 2009 Season On June 6

Auburn Hills, MI - The Detroit Shock will open the 2009 season as well as defense of its 2008 WNBA Championship on the road at Los Angeles in a nationally televised match-up with the Sparks on Saturday, June 6 (2:30 p.m. ET on ABC), it was announced today by the WNBA.
The home opener is set for Monday June 8 (7:30 p.m. ET) when the Shock meet the Los Angeles Sparks again, this time at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Shock will raise its 2008 WNBA championship banner and players and coaches will be presented with their championship rings during pre-game ceremonies.
Highlights of the Shock home schedule include two games versus 2008 Eastern Conference Finals opponent New York Liberty (August 4 and September 10), two meetings with Lindsay Whalen and the Connecticut Sun (July 5 and August 2), and two meetings with Eastern Conference rival Indiana Fever (June 19 and September 4). Single game match-ups include a meeting with Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter and the Phoenix Mercury (September 1), and a WNBA Finals rematch with Becky Hammon, Sophia Young and the San Antonio Silver Stars (August 23). Swin Cash will return to the Palace of Auburn Hills with Sue Bird and the Seattle Storm on August 18.
In addition to the season opener, two other Shock games are slated for national television this season - Tuesday, August 4 vs. the New York Liberty (ESPN2, 7:30 p.m.); and Saturday, August 29 at San Antonio (ESPN2, 3:00 p.m.).
Additional Shock games will be broadcast nationally via the league's 24-hour television network, NBA TV. A complete schedule of NBA TV games, as well as Detroit's preseason and local television broadcast schedule will be released at a later date. The 2009 WNBA Playoffs are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 16.
