Memphis Powers Past Nashville on Friday, 6-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds evened their series with the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds with a 6-2 victory on Friday night at AutoZone Park in the second game of a four-game set.

Four of Memphis' seven hits went for extra bases, while the club's six runs were the most scored through the first 10 games in the season series.

Redbirds starter Carlos Martinez improved to 3-2, scattering six hits and four walks while striking out one in 5 1/3 innings. His lone run came from a Hainley Statia solo homer in the third, which was his first Triple-A home run allowed this season. Martinez has now allowed two runs or less in all eight Triple-A starts.

Outfielder Jamie Romak went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis also homered while scoring two runs.

Back-to-back jacks broke up Zach Kroenke's no-hitter and gave the Redbirds a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. With Greg Garcia on first due to an inning-opening throwing error, Romak blasted his 17th home run of the season onto the bluff in left field. Curtis followed with his fourth big fly, marking the Redbirds' sixth back-to-back home run occurrence and third involving Romak.

The Redbirds added two runs with two outs in the sixth, which began with a Romak double off of the top of the left field wall. After Curtis was given an intentional walk, Chris Swauger crushed a two-run double.

Memphis added an insurance run in the eighth as Adron Chambers led off with an infield single. He proceeded steal second base, moved to third on a Chad Huffman pinch hit single, and scored on a Ryan Jackson sacrifice fly.

Solo home runs from Statia and Hunter Morris accounted for Nashville's runs. Statia's big fly was his first in 618 at-bats since 2011. Morris' team-leading 17th came in the eighth off of Mitchell Boggs.

Marc Rzepczynski pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings while stranding his only inherited runner. Boggs allowed three hits for run. Nick Greenwood closed out the contest with a shutout ninth.

Zach Kroenke (4-11) was tagged for five runs (four earned) in five hits and two walks in six innings for his league-leading 11th defeat.

Memphis and Nashville continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Saturday night at AutoZone Park. Left-hander Nick Additon (5-4, 4.36) will face Sounds righty R.J. Seidel (1-3, 5.72).
