Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Memphis 901 FC looks to build off a key result in its last match in a showdown with Ottawa Fury FC tomorrow night at 7:30 at AutoZone Park.
901 FC regrouped at halftime, made key substitutions, and hit its stride in the second half and earned a 2-2 draw against second-place New York Red Bulls II last Saturday. Memphis forward Brandon Allen scored twice to bring 901 FC level after trailing 2-0 at halftime, scoring in the 48th minute off a beautiful pass by Lagos Kunga, who entered as a substitute at the break, and then again in the 87th minute off a cross from Wes Charpie.
It was Allen's first two goals as a member of 901 FC. In addition to Kunga, Memphis brought on Adam Najem and Josh Morton in the second half, and the trio proved instrumental as 901 FC turned the tides.
This is the second meeting of the season between Memphis and Ottawa, as the two sides faced off north of the border on June 15 which was a 0-0 stalemate. In that match, Ottawa had many of the stats in its favor, but a staunch Memphis defense and five saves by Jeff Caldwell helped 901 FC stave off the attacks and earn a point.
Saturday's match against Ottawa continues a tough stretch on the 901 FC schedule. Including this match, Memphis has played three-straight matches against teams currently in the playoff picture (Ottawa, 6th; New York, 2nd; Nashville, 5th) and six-of-seven overall (Charlotte, 10th; Ottawa; Indy, 3rd).
In nine matches since the beginning of May, 901 FC has gotten a point in six of them after having points in three of its first nine matches of the season. Since that May 4 game against Birmingham Legion FC, Memphis has added playmakers Kunga and Allen, who have already combined for three goals, an assist, and seven shots on target.
After Saturday's match, 901 FC turns its attention to the month of August, which starts with a match at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC next Saturday. Memphis plays five matches in August with one at home, which is an August 10 meeting with North Carolina FC.
