Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (23-14, 60-47) pushed their winning streak to five in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays (14-24, 46-62) on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Tortugas took advantage of a pair of second-inning errors to take a 1-0 lead. After 3B Taylor Sparks drew a leadoff walk, 2B Ronald Bueno grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice. Blue Jays shortstop Richard Urena threw toward first base in hopes of turning a double play, but heaved the ball into the D-Jays dugout. Bueno advanced to second on the play.
Two batters later, C Joe Hudson hit a check swing grounder toward the third base line. Shane Dawson (L, 0-1) dove off the mound to grab the ball, but threw wildly past first base and allowed Bueno to score the first run of the game.
Hudson extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, which capped Daytona's scoring for the night. Matt Dean answered with a solo homer in the fifth, but Dunedin would not score again.
RHP Keury Mella (W, 1-0), making his Tortugas debut after being acquired from the San Fransisco Giants as part of the Mike Leake trade, threw five innings and allowed one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
RHP Scott Brattvet (H, 4) recorded two strikeouts to work around one hit in 0.2 inning, and RHP Carlos Gonzalez (H, 3) tossed 1.1 scoreless frames. RHP Evan Mitchell (H, 7) dealt a scoreless eighth, and has allowed just one earned run since the beginning of June. RHP Alejandro Chacin (S, 4) delivered a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.
The Tortugas improved to 11-3 against the Blue Jays in 2015, and held Dunedin to 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position in Wednesday's win. Daytona will go for the sweep in Thursday's series finale, with RHP Nick Travieso scheduled to make his first start of the second half at 7:05 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
