Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Matt Imhof hurled six innings of three-hit ball on Thursday, leading the Clearwater Threshers to their second-straight shutout win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-0 at Bright House Field.
Clearwater (25-16) took the series from Lakeland, and regained the lead atop the Florida State League North after a Daytona loss against Dunedin.
Imhof (6-4) dominated in the start, holding the Flying Tigers to just three hits and two walks across six scoreless frames. His seven strikeouts set a new season-best and matched a career-high.
The Threshers broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a run off Brennan Smith (4-3).
Andrew Pullin sent an opposite-field double to left to lead off, and Rhys Hoskins followed by pulling a single through the left side. The ball was mishandled by the left fielder Raph Rhymes for an error, allowing Pullin to cross with the first run.
Imhof cruised through six innings before giving way two Jesen Therrien, who picked up right where Imhof left off. Therrien struck out two across two scoreless, lowering his ERA to 1.29.
Clearwater added some cushion in the eighth.
Aaron Brown battled his way through a nine-pitch at-bat before singling to right to start the inning. Smith then gave way to reliever Tyler Ford, and Pullin promptly put down a sac bunt to advance Brown to scoring position.
The Flying Tigers (9-27) intentionally walked Hoskins, and Dylan Cozens made them pay by chopping a base hit through the right side to score Brown.
With runners at the corners, Cozens took off from first and Willians Astudillo executed the hit-and-run perfectly, grounding a single through the wide-open right side to bring home Hoskins and make it 3-0.
Chance Numata added a sacrifice fly to right, bumping up the advantage to 4-0.
Ulises Joaquin worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out Jared Reaves to end the ballgame.
Clearwater will hit the road for six games, starting with a three-game set at Tampa that kicks off on Friday at 7 p.m. Yacksel Rios (5-2) takes the hill against Dietrich Enns (0-1), and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
