Trenton Thunder News Release
(Portland, ME) - Neil Mechill's three-run home run in the seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the Trenton Thunder past the Portland Sea Dogs, 4-2, Wednesday night at Hadlock Field to salvage a win in the three-game series. Brett Marshall (11-4) pitched six strong innings for Trenton (60-43), which still has not been swept in any series and took 18 of the 25 meetings from Portland this season.
Kevin Mahoney led off the seventh with a walk against Sea Dogs reliever Ryan Pressly (1-2), and Rob Segedin grounded a single to left one out later. Medchill then hit his blast out onto the scoreboard in left center, his fifth homer with Trenton this season and second of the series. He went 3-for-4 in the game.
Marshall allowed one run on eight hits and struck out six and became the first Eastern League pitcher to reach 11 victories in 2012. Bryce Brentz' RBI single against Marshall tied the game at 1 in the sixth and Portland still had the bases loaded with no outs in the inning. But the right-hander struck out Kolbrin Vitek and induced a double-play groundout from Dan Butler to keep the score tied.
Mark Montgomery tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn a hold, while Kelvin Perez allowed a run in the ninth but struck out the final two hitters to finish his third save of the season.
Zoilo Almonte hit a solo home run against Portland starter Jason Urquidez in the fourth inning to open the scoring. Urquidez allowed only one run in five innings in his first start since 2005. David Adams recorded two singles to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
Trenton next begins an eight-game homestand with a five-game series against the Harrisburg Senators. Game one will be Thursday night at 7:05 pm, with right-hander Mikey O'Brien (4-3) expected to start for Trenton against lefty Danny Rosenbaum (7-7).
