New Britain Stadium - New Britain, CT - 12:05 PM
LAST GAME: Mark Cohoon allowed just one hit through his first six innings and the Binghamton Mets held on to defeat the New Britain Rock Cats 4-3 last night at New Britain Stadium. Cohoon matched a season-high by navigating through 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits to earn his fifth win. Wilfredo Tovar got Binghamton on the board in the fifth with a three-run double off New Britain starter Blake Martin. Eric Campbell added a solo homer in the eighth, his second in as many games. After giving up a run in the seventh and allowing two hits in the eight, Cohoon gave way to Brad Holt. The righty allowed both runners to score, but preserved the lead. Robert Carson threw a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Zack Wheeler (9-5, 2.99) makes his 18th start of the season and second against the Rock Cats. Wheeler comes off his roughest start as a B-Met. The righty allowed a career-high eight runs on six hits over just 3.2 innings against the Bowie Baysox on July 20. Wheeler baffled the Rock Cats in a win on May 23, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out seven in eight innings. Wheeler owns the sixth-best ERA and ranks third in strikeouts (101) in the Eastern League.
RHP B.J. Hermsen (6-5, 3.44) takes the mound for his 15th start as a Rock Cat and makes his second start versus the B-Mets. Hermsen defeated the Harrisburg Senators in his last start on July 20. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings. The Iowa native allowed a season-high ten hits against the B-Mets on May 24. He took the no-decision, allowing just four runs (three earned) over seven innings. Hermsen started the season with the Fort Myers Miracle (High-A). He was promoted after going 1-0 with a 0.78 ERA in four starts in the Florida State League. Selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft out of West Delaware HS (Manchester, IA), Hermsen is in his fourth pro season.
BETTER SINCE BUFFALO: Since returning from a rough two-start appearance with the Buffalo Bisons (AAA), B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon has gone 2-0 with a 2.28 ERA in four quality starts.
TOVAR DELIVERS IN THE CLUTCH: Wilfredo Tovar's three-run double with the bases loaded in the fifth inning last night was his fifth extra-base hit with runners in scoring position. The shortstop has gone .500 (12-for-24) in that situation and driven in 13 runs. He is now 4-for-7 with the bases loaded.
CAMPBELL CRUSHING IN CONNECTICUT: B-Mets outfielder Eric Campbell launched a solo homer in the eighth inning last night. It was his second homer in as many games against the New Britain Rock Cats. Both were hit in the eighth inning. He now shares the team lead in home runs with Reese Havens and Jefry Marte.
WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE: Zack Wheeler's previous start against the Rock Cats came on May 23, a 12:05 PM Wednesday game. Wheeler allowed one run over eight innings to earn his fourth straight win.
BAD START, GOOD FINISH: The B-Mets lost their first four against the Rock Cats this season. They have battled back and won three of the last four games.
ROADTRIP RUBBER MATCH: Binghamton has gone 3-3 in the first six games on this roadtrip. They dropped three of four in Bowie before taking the first two against the Rock Cats. The B-Mets haven't had a losing roadtrip since they went 3-4 against Portland and New Britain (May 18-24)
ROAD SERIES SWEEP: A win today would secure Binghamton's first road series sweep of the season. The B-Mets haven't taken all games in a set since they swept the Erie SeaWolves in a four-game series back in late August last year.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets return to the Southern Tier and start a four-game series against he Portland Sea Dogs tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen gets the ball against LHP Drake Britton.
