McGovern, Mazzola Help Goldeyes Edge Dogs

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Chicago Dogs 2-1 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Goldeyes overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the third when Josh Mazzola struck a two-run double to left-centre field that scored Josh Romanski and Reggie Abercrombie. Romanski doubled to right-centre with one out before Abercrombie beat out an infield single on a groundball in the hole at shortstop.
Goldeyes' starter Kevin McGovern worked through seven innings, and held the Dogs to one earned run on eight hits. The left-hander stranded seven runners on base, and pinned the tying run in scoring position three separate times after the Goldeyes took the lead.
"It was really nice pitching in front of Gavin (Stupienski)," said McGovern. "That was the first time all year I got to pitch in front of him. He did a really great job settling me in. I had a really big moment in the fourth inning with the bases loaded on a 3-0 count, and he just gave it a great frame, and I was able to get out of it with great defence."
McGovern (4-8) picked up his fourth win of the year, walking three and striking out seven. With 94 strikeouts on the season, McGovern is just six away from becoming the second pitcher in American Association to fan 100 or more in four different seasons.
Cameron McVey stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the eighth by striking out the side. Victor Capellan fanned two in a scoreless ninth to earn his 18th save of the year.
Former Major League left-hander Scott Barnes (1-4) took the loss for Chicago, allowing two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. Barnes walked three, struck out four, and retired 12 of the final 14 Goldeyes to face him.
Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the first when Trey Vavra doubled home Edwin Arroyo.
Mazzola finished with two hits and started an inning-ending double play in the fourth that helped McGovern escape a bases loaded, one-out jam.
The Goldeyes open a three-game series at home against the Cleburne Railroaders on Monday night. First pitch from Shaw Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Alex Boshers (3-7, 5.50) takes the mound for Winnipeg.
