Winnipeg, MB. - Scott Barnes twirled seven strong innings, but found himself on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel as Chicago fell 2-1 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday.
Barnes allowed just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four, but Winnipeg starter Kevin McGovern stymied Chicago for the second time this season, allowing only one run in his seven innings.
Chicago's only run of the game came in the top half of the first inning. Kenny Wilson led the frame off with a double, but was thrown out at third base trying to advance on an ensuing Edwin Arroyo single. Later in the inning however, Treysen Vavra scored Arroyo from first on a double to left center. McGovern pitched out of troubled in the inning, striking out two Dogs, and stranding Vavra in scoring position.
WInnipeg tallied their only runs of the contest on a two-run double from Josh Mazzola in the bottom of the third inning. Josh Romanski doubled to lead off the frame, Reggie Abercrombie singled to follow, and both men scored on the Mazzola extra-base hit. Mazzola reached base all four times he came to the plate Sunday, and reached in each of his final seven trips to the dish in the series.
The Dogs threatened again in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with one out for Mike Falsetti. The Chicago catcher grounded into an inning-ending double play on a full count pitch to end the rally.
The Dogs wrapped out ten hits and drew four walks in the game, but left ten men on base, and went 1-9 with runners in scoring position.
McGovern allowed one run on eight hits, and struck out seven to earn his fourth victory of the season. Two of his four wins have come against Chicago.
Victor Capellan worked a scoreless ninth inning for Winnipeg to earn his 18th save of the season.
With the loss, Chicago falls to 29-44 on the year, while Winnipeg moves to 33-41 with the victory.
Chicago will travel to Fargo, N.D. for the first of three games with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beginning Monday night.
