Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, Ind. - One day after pounding out 11 runs on 17 hits, the Wichita Wingnuts were limited to just six singles as the Gary SouthShore RailCats won the series with a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard.
RailCats starter Keaton Steele (4-2) was excellent, shutting out the Wingnuts over 5.2 innings while allowing just four hits. The righty only struck out two, walking three while running his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 22.1 frames.
Gary SouthShore (42-29) took a first inning lead on an RBI groundout from Randy Santiesteban, then added two more in the second courtesy of a two-out, two-strike, two-run single from Alex Crosby. Crosby was back at it again in the fourth, lifting a sacrifice fly that gave the RailCats a 4-0 edge.
All the damage came against Wingnuts starter Charlie Gillies (6-4), who was tagged for nine hits and four runs while tying his season-low with only two strikeouts.
Wichita (44-29) got on the board in the top of the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice groundout from John Nester, but Adam Quintana recovered to retire the next five and clinch the series for Gary SouthShore.
Felix Carvallo and Daniel Tillman pitched well in relief for Wichita, combining to work 2.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one baserunner.
The Wingnuts travel to Sioux City to open a three-game series with the league-leading Explorers on Monday. Righty Tyler Kane (5-2, 5.55) will start for Wichita, while Sioux City has not yet announced their starter. First pitch from Mercy Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
