Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - Connor McDavid scored on a 2-on-1 with Remi Elie in overtime to close out a 6-5 thriller over North Bay.
The Otters started off the period buzzing in front of the North Bay net. Elie looked like he'd get his fourth goal in Erie after a hat trick the night before, but Jake Smith nabbed the puck with his glove. Troy Donnay took a shot from the point that Patrick Fellows redirected, getting the Otters on the board just over six minutes in. Back to back penalties for the Otters gave North Bay the opening they needed to break the deficit when Ryan Kujawinksi found the back of the net, tying the game at 1 going into intermission.
It took Mike Amadio 20 seconds to put the Battalion up 2-1 over the Otters. Travis Dermott put up a shot that beat Smith three minutes later, once again tying the clubs. Two late penalties to North Bay were all the Otters needed. McDavid struck first from Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome, giving Erie the advantage. With Smith down on the ice and an open net, Elie scored his fourth goal in two games and gave the Otters a two-goal lead, but it wasn't a lead that would last. Miles Liberati brought the Battalion back within one with 48 seconds left in the period.
Donnay started up the scoring for the third period barely a minute in with a rocket from the point to make it 5-3 Otters. With Nick Betz and Kurtis MacDermid in the box not long after, Brenden Miller cut the Battalion deficit by one. It took North Bay another four minutes to tie the game at five, sending Daniel Dekoning to the bench in favor of Devin Williams. Smith made save after save on the Otters, robbing Elie and Strome. With three minutes to go in the period, the Otters killed a critical hooking penalty to DeBrincat, preventing the Battalion from a late rally.
With neither team able to crack through the net minders, the game went into overtime. The North Bay defense stopped one set of chances, but McDavid and Elie came into the zone on a two-on-one, and McDavid finished the night with a gorgeous goal, capping the Otters' 6-5 win.
Strome, Elie and McDavid all picked up three-point nights, with Dermott and Donnay both notching two. The Otters outshot North Bay 32-30. Elie now has 10 points in five games with the Otters.
Erie finishes out January on the road with a trip to Guelph on Friday, Jan. 23 followed by Owen Sound on Sun., Jan. 25, with two other games at Peterborough and Kingston.
