Saginaw Finish Weekend With Loss to Guelph

The Guelph Storm travelled to the Dow Event Center as the Spirit played host to their Western Conference rival on Saturday night. The Spirit turned in a solid first period of play, scoring 4 goals in the first 20 minutes, but were unable to hold the lead which eventually gave way to a 5-4 loss to the Storm.

Saginaw put Spirit fans on their feet early in the first period, turning in a stellar period against the Storm. The Spirit sent the penalty kill unit to the ice early in the first, as Saginaw's Chase Stewart headed to the box for boarding. The man advantage for Guelph did not stop Saginaw's Dylan Sadowy who ripped a shorthanded goal into the back of the net 55 seconds into the period. Connor Brown picked up the puck just after a Guelph turnover and fed a nice pass to Sadowy who finished it off and brought Saginaw to an early 1-0 lead over the Storm. Evan Cormier was also credited with an assist on the play. The Spirit killed the penalty and Stewart picked up the puck fresh out of the box and fed a nice pass to Sadowy who netted his 28th goal of the season and his 2nd of the night for the Spirit, putting the score to 2-0 favoring the Spirit. Saginaw's Tye Felhaber joined the scoring party at 4:27 of the first period, firing home a pretty wrist shot, his 9th goal of the season, making it a 3-0 game over Guelph. Eventually the Storm were able to put a tally on the board when Tyler Boston snuck the puck past Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier at 6:24 of the period. James McEwan and Kyle Rhodes took the assists on the goal. Saginaw found the back of the net a 4th time before the buzzer of the first period sounded, finishing the first 20 minutes of play at a score of 4-1 over Guelph. Marcus Crawford netted his 2nd goal of the season after he sank the puck into the back of the net from the blue line at the 9:19 mark. Guelph outshot Saginaw in the first period 15-11.

Guelph cut their deficit to one goal throughout the second period, netting two goals past Saginaw's Evan Cormier. Tyler Bertuzzi scored a power play goal at 4:26 of the second period, with the help oh Zac Leslie and Jason Dickinson. The goal cut the game's scoring in half, putting the game to 4-2 in favor of the Spirit. Tyler Boston netted his second goal of the game and cut the Guelph deficit to one tally at 18:33 after he picked up a pass from James McEwan. Saginaw and Guelph both turned in a fast paced period, with shots on goal in the second period reading Guelph 18, Saginaw 6.

The Guelph Storm took control of the third period, netting another 2 goals in last period of play and taking the lead and game winner over Saginaw. Tyler Bertuzzi netted his 2nd goal of the game at the 8:23 mark with the assists being credited to Pius Suter and Jason Dickinson. Bertuzzi's goal tied the game at 4-4 and left the opportunity for either team to take the lead. The Storm struck first on a goal by Pius Suter at 14:47, which allowed Guelph to take the lead over Saginaw. The Spirit fought hard to net another goal to tie the game but were unable to find the back of the net. The Guelph Storm took the 5-4 win over the Spirit and led shots on goal 46-28.

The Saginaw Spirit will start a four game road stretch on Monday, January 19th as they take on the Plymouth Whalers at Compuware Arena. Puck is scheduled to drop at 2:00 p.m. That game can be heard on AM 790 WSGW. The Spirit will also make an appearance on the road against North Bay, Sudbury and Barrie before heading back to the Dow Event Center for a Thursday night game against the Plymouth Whalers on January 29th. That game is set to begin at 7:11 pm.
