Mayhem get out to early lead and hold on for close victory
MACON, GA- The Macon Mayhem prevailed in a defensive battle tonight against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs, as goaltender Troy Passingham made 25 saves in the team's 3-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
There were three goals in the first two periods, with all three coming in the first frame of the game. Stathis Soumelidis led off the scoring, as he buried his own rebound past Roanoke goaltender Brad Barone. John Siemer and Darren McCormick picked up the helpers on the goal. McCormick scored a goal of his own to put the Mayhem up two goals, as he collected a great pass from Siemer and buried the backhander. Roanoke answered with a power play goal at the end of the first period to bring the score to 2-1.
No goals were scored for the rest of the game until the Mayhem added an empty net goal with 19 seconds left. Goaltender Troy Passingham cleared the puck to the stick of Stephen Pierog, who fed Chris Izmirlian for the empty-net goal.
NOTABLE STATS
Troy Passingham started for the second straight game and picked up his second consecutive victory. He saved 25 of 26 shots he faced, and he also tallied an assist on the empty-net goal.
With the empty-net goal, Chris Izmirlian extended his point streak to five games. In his first five games for the Mayhem, he has two goals, six assists and eight points. Both Jake Trask and Caleb Cameron had their long point streaks come to an end tonight.
KERR'S COMMENTS
"We battled hard tonight. We got out to a lead like we wanted, and then we did a great job just battling defensively in the last two periods. It wasn't the prettiest win, but we need to find different ways to win, and we did that tonight."
