February 16, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release
MACON, GA- Goaltender Charlie Finn and the Macon Mayhem held strong, as they survived late in the game to defeat the Birmingham Bulls 3-2 at home on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mayhem secured the early lead they were looking for, as Dennis Sicard got the Mayhem on the board first with a shorthanded goal. Sicard and Siemer found themselves together behind the Birmingham defense, and they used the give-and-go to create a tap in goal for Sicard. The Mayhem fan-favorite had a busy first period, as he also squared off in a fight with Birmingham defenseman John Rey.
Macon added one more goal to their lead in the second period, as defenseman Zach Urban dangled into the middle and fired a shot past the goaltender. The goal was Urban's first career professional goal, which comes in his 18th game. Darren McCormick tallied his 10th assist of the season on the goal.
The Mayhem padded their lead to three goals with an incredible goal from Dylan Denomme. Mike Moroso sent a centering saucer pass that Denomme batted out of mid-air to give Macon the 3-0 lead. Birmingham answered back a few minutes later, as Steven Phee rifled home a one-timer to make it 3-1. The Bulls made it very scary, scoring with eight seconds left to bring the Mayhem lead to one. Charlie Finn stood tall, as Birmingham had a flurry in front of the net in the final seconds, securing the 3-2 Mayhem victory.
NOTABLE STATS
Charlie Finn earned his team-high 11th victory of the season, as he stopped 29 of the 31 Birmingham shots he faced. The win brings him into sole possession of fifth place among SPHL goaltenders in wins.
Darren McCormick led the team in points with two and was the only Mayhem player to record a multi-point game. Mike Moroso tallied another assist, which is his fourth point in three games with Macon.
The opening goal of the game was the Mayhem's fifth shorthanded goal of the season. With the assist on the goal, John Siemer has had a hand in four of the five shorthanded goals this season. He leads the team with three shorthanded goals, and that total is tied with Huntsville's Christian Powers for the SPHL lead in shorthanded goals.
KERR'S COMMENTS
"We did a great job of getting an early lead and keeping the pressure on them until we went up 3-0 in the third. After that, it seemed like we laid back too much and it almost cost us. We will take the win and use it as a teaching point."
