May 7, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Greenville Drive News Release

Marcelo Mayer provided an encore performance to his efforts on Saturday, going 4-for-4 on Sunday with his third homer of the series and two doubles and two RBIs, again bolstering the Greenville Drive (12-14) to a win; this time a 7-3 victory over the Asheville Tourists (9-16). The victory in Asheville on Sunday was the Drive's fifth win of the week as they dropped only one game of the six game series.

Mayer, whose performance at the dish as of late has caught the eye of not only the South Atlantic League but the entire Minor Leagues, finished the week batting .516 for the series, with 3 HRs, 16 hits including 6 doubles, 12 RBIs, and 31 total bases.

A remarkable day for Mayer was aided by stellar days at the plate by Tyler Miller and Brainer Bonaci, both of whom went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs a piece, while Bonaci added a double and Miller added a home run. While Mayer may have been the star of the week for the Drive, it was hitting such as Bonaci's and Miller's that the Drive received all week from various players that helped make the difference in Asheville.

The Drive faced another deficit ealy on Sunday, falling behind 3-1 in through five innings, thanks to an RBI double from Asheville's Kobe Kato in the fourth and a homer from Tim Borden II in the fifth. Mayer knocked in the Drive's lone run in the first inning on a solo home run, his fourth of the year and third of the series.

Mayer continued his habit of coming through for the Drive this series, as he slapped a double to right field to score Chase Meidroth and bring the game to 3-2. Later in the inning with Mayer on third and Miller at second thanks to a walk and a balk, Bonaci singled to right field plating Mayer and Miller to take the lead for good, 4-3.

The game would stay that way until the eighth where Mayer again provided the spark the Drive needed to close the game out. He slapped a one-out double to center, setting up Bryan Gonzalez who immediately followed up Mayer's at-bat with a double of his own to score Mayer and give the Drive a 5-3 lead. Tyler would add the insurance during the ensuing at-bat launching a homer of his own, making it 7-3.

Pitching-wise the Drive received a solid performance from starter Hunter Dobbins, who made his Drive debut, going four innings, allowing two runs on two hits, issuing two walks and striking out two. He'd be backed up by Jordan DiValerio who spun 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run. Nathan Landry, followed DiValerio, going 1.1 innings while striking out three of four batters he faced. Christopher Troye and Joey Stock rounded out the eighth and ninth innings for the Drive, each picking up a strikeout and preserving the game.

The Drive (Boston Red Sox) return to action on May 9 at Fluor Field as they open up a six-game series with the Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox). First pitch on May 9 is slated for 7:05 p.m. The series will mark the start of 12 home games in 13 days for the Drive as they start a six-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) on May 16 following the series with the Dash.
