Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

HICKORY, NC - Kendall Simmons homered and the BlueClaws bullpen gave up one run over seven innings as Jersey Shore earned a series win at Hickory with a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Jersey Shore (12-11) gets back over .500 with the win and they take four of six in the series from Hickory (12-13) in the lone meetings between the two clubs this season.

The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Kendall Simmons. His home run gave him a long ball in three successive at bats, after he homered in both the seventh and ninth innings on Saturday night in the BlueClaws 13-1, six home run win.

Hickory tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single from Marcus Smith off starter Victor Vargas. Activated earlier in the day for his season debut, Vargas gave up one run in two innings of work.

The BlueClaws re-claimed the lead in the fourth inning. Casey Martin broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single that put the BlueClaws up 2-1 and Arturo De Freitas added a SAC fly that brought in Rixon Wingrove to make it 3-1.

Yenci Penda doubled in a run in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Carlos Francisco to slice the lead to 3-2, but neither team would score the rest of the way.

Alex Garbrick (3-0) threw a scoreless inning to earn the win. Carlos Francisco gave up one run in two innings of relief. Rodolfo Sanchez threw two scoreless innings. Then Tommy McCollum pitched the eighth and Tristan Garnett the ninth for his first save of the year.

Simmons went 3-4 for the BlueClaws and Wilfredo Flores went 2-3 in the win. Jared Carr was 0-2 but drew two walks.

Crawdads starter Gavin Collyer (0-3) gave up three runs in five innings and took the loss.

After a day off on Monday, the BlueClaws open a six-game series at Greensboro on Tuesday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
