PORTLAND WINS THIRD-STRAIGHT - The Portland Sea Dogs won their third-straight game yesterday morning, 2-1 over the Somerset Patriots. Somerset took the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning with Groome on the mound. Brandon Lockridge led off with a double to center and Nick Sogard made an error, allowing him to reach third. Michael Beltre grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing in Lockridge, giving Somerset a 1-0 advantage. The Sea Dogs responded in the bottom of the fourth against Patriots starter Mitch Spence. David Hamilton got on with a bunt single and stole second base. Pedro Castellanos was hit by a pitch and Tyler Dearden grounded into a fielder's choice at second base, scoring Hamilton, and tying the game 1-1 Portland added on in the bottom of the fifth with Spence still pitching. Christian Koss led off with a double. Brandon Howlett took a base hit to left, driving in Koss, and giving the Sea Dogs the lead back 2-1. The Sea Dogs bullpen took over for Groome in the seventh inning, shutting down the Patriots offense the rest of the way. Brendan Nail tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out one in the process. Chase Shugart came in for the ninth, hurling 1.0 scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two, earning his third save of the season and a 2-1 win for the Sea Dogs.
JAY GROOME STAYS STRONG - LHP Jay Groome continued his hot streak yesterday for the Sea Dogs. The lefty pitched 6.0 innings allowing one run (unearned) on four hits while walking two and striking out nine. He has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts (12.0 innings) and has struck out 10 during that time. Groome is slated to start again on Sunday against the Patriots in the series finale.
WELCOME BACK, RIO - LHP Rio Gomez was activated from the Injured List yesterday for the Portland Sea Dogs. His first 3 appearances last season came with High-A Greenville before his promotion to Portland. He posted a 3.43 ERA (15 ER/39.1 IP) over 26 appearances for Portland, his Double-A debut. Gomez made 16 consecutive scoreless appearances from 7/8/22-9/16/22 (24.0 IP).
GERMAN EARNS THE PROMOTION - RHP Frank German was promoted to AAA Worcester following yesterday's game. German finished his time in Double-A this season with a 3-1 record and 3.18 ERA. He made 11 appearances with the Sea Dogs, tossing 11.1 innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out 18. He made his Triple-A debut last night, pitching a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one.
WELCOME TO THE RED SOX, MR. KENNEDY - The Boston Red Sox have signed RHP Brett Kennedy to a minor league contract, assigning him to the Sea Dogs. Kennedy was pitching for the Long Island Ducks (Atlantic League) before signing with Boston and had a 2-1 record with a 3.31 ERA. He appeared in six games with the San Diego Padres in 2018, and recorded a 6.75 ERA.
HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD - Portland reliever Brendan Nail has not allowed a hit in his last four outings for the Sea Dogs. In that time he is 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA. He has tossed 5.0 innings allowing one run (unearned), one walk and striking out six.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - May 25, 2002: Adrian Gonzalez became the second Sea Dog to collect five hits in a game. Portland beat Reading, 11-10 when Kevin Millar hit a home run in the bottom of the tenth inning - his only hit during a three-game rehab stint.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Victor Santos takes the mound tonight for the Sea Dogs. He last faced the Patriots 4/28 in New Jersey and pitched 6.0 innings allowing four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four.
