Last time out...
Dave Middendorf went seven strong innings, Sam Eberle drove in four runs and the Florence Freedom (2-0) beat the Washington Wild Things (0-2) by a score of 6-2 Friday night at UC Health Stadium. With one away in the first, Buddy Sosnoskie, making his Freedom debut, singled. Jacob Tanis drew a walk and with two away, and with two strikes on him, Sam Eberle launched a three-run home run the opposite way to right field. It was the Freedom's fourth homer of the young 2014 campaign. In the second inning, it was Niko Gallego getting the offense started with a single to left. Cole Miles doubled down the right field line and an errant throw from right fielder Stewart Ijames to second base allowed Gallego to score and Miles to advance to third. Sosnoskie smoked a single to score Miles and all of a sudden it was 5-0 Freedom. Washington tallied two in the fourth but would not score after that.
For Starters...
Casey Henn had a sensational rookie season for the Freedom in 2013, posting a 5-0 record with a 3.67 ERA for Florence fresh out of Wright State University. In nine appearances, eight starts, Henn struck out 38 batters in 49 innings while only allowing only 39 hits.
Hot starts...
Sam Eberle and Joe Staley have both tallied two straight multi-hit games to start the 2014 season. Eberle is 4-8 while Staley is 5-8 to start the season.
Early offense...
The Freedom have scored a combined 11 runs through innings 1-5 so far this season. Meanwhile they have only scored one run in innings 6-9.
Hey Buddy!
Buddy Sosnoskie wasted no time making an impression in his Freedom debut yesterday, tallying three hits including a double and a run scored.
2-0...
The Freedom are 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season, a year they started 3-0.
Fran vs. Bart...
Florence skipper Fran Riordan now has a career record of 23-3 against Washington manager Bart Zeller.
Strong relief...
The Freedom bullpen has tossed six no-hit innings so far this season, striking out seven batters along the way.
Bombs away...
With Eberle's home run yesterday, Florence has hit 16 home runs in their last 14 games against Washington.
Returning to the Freedom for 2014...
Florence returns 9 active players from their 2013 squad. RHP Daniel DeSimone (8-4, 2.91 ERA), RHP Casey Henn (5-0, 3.67 ERA), RHP Jorge Marban (2-4, 2.04 ERA), RHP Chuck Weaver (4-2, 3.69 ERA), INF Jacob Tanis (.264, 17 HR, 72 RBI), INF Bobby Joe Tannehill (.210, 1 HR, 9 RBI), OF Kyle Bluestein (.164, 3 HR, 17 RBI), OF Cole Miles (.205, 0 HR, 6 RBI), and OF Nick Stein (.291, 2 HR, 7 RBI).
Health is key...
The last time Cole Miles had a completely healthy season was 2011 for the Freedom. All he did that year was steal 40 bases and record a .308 batting average at the plate. The last two years have been full of injuries but a healthy Miles at the top of the order is a dangerous Miles.
Tonight's Special Jersey Number...
Niko Gallego is wearing number 61 tonight. The jersey will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky, sponsored by Braden & Associates Law Firm.
