Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
SAUGET, IL - Aaron Newcomb continued a strong early trend of dominant pitching for Gateway and the Grizzlies scratched across a run in the last of the seventh to take the middle game of the series 1-0 on Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.
Newcomb (1-0) shut down the Traverse City offense through eight one-hit innings, yielding just a single to Rob Benedict in the last of the third to go along with two walks. The righthander, making his first start with the Grizzlies, worked out of a two on, none out jam in the seventh thanks to a catch at the wall by Madison Beaird, who then threw out Jose Vargas trying to advance to third on the play. It was lone time in the game where Traverse City had multiple baserunners on in an inning.
The momentum from the defensive play carried over into the bottom half of the frame where Gateway finally got to Traverse City starter Mike Devine (0-1). Jonathan Johnson reached on a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beaird and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Niko Vasquez then won a nine-pitch battle with Devine by flaring a broken-bat single through the drawn-in infield to score Johnson with the game's lone run. Will Rankin came on to get the last two outs of the seventh and retired the side in order in the eighth.
The go-ahead hit knocked Devine out of the game after a tremendous outing. He lasted 6.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits with five strikeouts and just one walk. Devine had faced the minimum and retired 14 in a row before running into trouble in the seventh inning.
Richard Barrett picked up his first save of the season for the Grizzlies with a perfect ninth inning.
The Beach Bums will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Casey Delgado (0-0, --) will get the ball for Traverse City against Gateway's Andrew Aizenstadt (0-0, --). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET from GCS Ballpark. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 3:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
