Kansas City Mavericks News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks' four-game win streak came to an end Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to the Amarillo Gorillas at Amarillo Civic Center. Gorillas' forward Joe Guenther led all scorers with three points on two goals and an assist including the game-winning goal. Mike Brown stopped 39 of 41 shots in net for Amarillo who improved to 18-26-8 on the season. Karl Sellan and Simon Watson scored goals for the Mavericks as the team fell to 24-23-4 and remain in sixth place in the Northern Conference.
"We had three missed defensive assignments that led to the first three goals," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "It needs to be corrected before we can get back on a roll."
"Our power play generated a lot of great chances," added Hillman. "But we just weren't able to score tonight."
The Gorillas unlocked the scoreless tie at the 15:35 mark of the first period when forward Jake Morissette one-timed a Gordon Bell pass that beat Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger. It only took the Mavericks 27 seconds to tie the game at one. Sellan scored from the slot on nice pass from Toby Lafrance to tie the game going into the first intermission.
Bell , Guenther, and Andy Brennan all scored for Amarillo in the second period to open up the game. Bell scored the Gorilloas second power play goal of the game at 4:01, and Guenther had the eventual game winner just over three minutes later. The Mavs got back to within a goal at the 11:23 mark when Kyle Bochek made a centering pass to Watson who redirected the puck under the padding of the Gorillas' goaltender. That would be as close as Missouri would get. Brennan notched Amarillo's final goal of the period when his shot beat Effinger at the 12:39 mark.
Guenther added his second and final marker at 4:38 of the third for the final goal of the game.
The Gorillas finished 2-4 on the power play while Missouri was 0 for 6. The Mavericks had 41 shots on net but only were able to get two pucks past Brown. Amarillo had five goals on 26 shots, and it marked the most goals against Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger in 18 games this season.
