Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas, behind two Joe Guenther goals, took down the Missouri Mavericks 5-2 Saturday night.
The Gorillas struck first for the eighth time over their last ten games with a power-play goal at the 15:35 mark of the first period. Forward Jake Morissette one-timed a Gordon Bell pass from the far circle for his 20th marker on the year. Twenty-seven seconds later, Missouri's Karl Sellan pumped his one-time shot past the glove of Gorillas netminder Mike Brown, tying the game at one going into the first intermission.
Amarillo broke out in the second frame, as Gordon Bell (power-play goal), Joe Guenther, and Andy Brennan all scored. Gorillas rookie defenseman Andy Brennan notched Amarillo's final goal of the period when he hammered his shot from the far point past Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger at the 12:39 mark. Amarillo 4 Missouri 2 after two periods of play.
Gorillas forward Joe Guenther added another marker at the 4:38 mark of the third. Amarillo's penalty kill was perfect in the period, stopping all three Missouri opportunities (6-6 on the kill for the game). Final score Amarillo 5 Missouri 2.
The Gorillas home power-play unit went 2 for 4 on the night. The unit has scored 15 times over their last 9 home contests...With a goal and two assists, Joe Guenther has 8 points over his last 5 home tilts...Jake Morissette collected a goal and assist and now has 6 points over his last 5 games.
Amarillo begins their season-long six-game road swing this Wednesday, February 24th at the Colorado Eagles. The game broadcast will start at 7:55pm CST and can be followed on 1440 AM ESPN Radio and CHL-TV. Fans will have an opportunity to win an autographed photo of a Gorillas player during the second period of the game broadcast by answering a trivia question on the Gorillas' Facebook page.
