Mavs win home series
July 10, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
For the first time in their last eight tries, the Mavs finally won a home series, as Eddy Martinez-Esteve's game-winning sac fly in the bottom of the 11th gave the Mavs a 9-8 rubber match win over the Visalia Rawhide Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Kyle Seager started the 11th with a double off Ryan Robowski (1-2). Edilio Colina then laid down a sac bunt, but new pitcher T.J. Hose committed a throwing error, allowing Colina to reach and put Seager at third with none out.
After an intentional walk to Denny Almonte, Martinez-Esteve lifted a fly ball to center, more than deep enough to score Seager and end the game.
Both teams were trading runs back and forth for the first half of the game. Ryan Wheeler opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the top of the first.
The Mavs answered with an RBI groundout by Almonte, and a two-run homer by Chavez.
Wheeler responded with a two-run homer of his own in the third to tie game. Chavez then shot back with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning to put the Mavs back up 4-3.
Rossmel Perez had an RBI groundout in the fourth knot the score again, but the Mavs pushed across a run on a double play in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead.
The Rawhide went in front in the fifth, on another RBI groundout by Wheeler and then a passed ball. The Mavs tied it with an RBI double by Chavez.
Visalia took an 8-6 lead in the sixth. Gerson Montilla broke the tie with an RBI single, and Dan Kaczrowski followed with a sac fly.
The Mavs pulled even in the seventh. Chavez blasted his second home run of the night to put the Mavs within one. Maximo Mendez then came through with a two-out RBI single to tie it.
The Rawhide looked like they were going break the tie in the ninth. Wheeler led off with a shot out to the deepest part of the park in right-center field.
Almonte, on a dead sprint, jumped a good couple of feet above the wall, made the catch, and held on as the came crashing back down to the ground.
The stunning catch helped a solid effort from the bullpen. After Cheyne Hann allowed a run in the sixth, three Maverick relievers combined to hold the Rawhide scoreless over the final five innings. Bobby LaFromboise (9-4) tossed a scoreless 11th to earn the win.
The Mavs will look to use the momentum from the back-to-back walk- off wins as they head down to Rancho Cucamonga to begin a three-game series with the Quakes Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
