Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - Lancaster's offense struck for nine runs in the bottom of fifth inning to erase a seven-run deficit and lift the JetHawks to an 18-12 comeback victory over Rancho Cucamonga at Clear Channel Stadium Friday. Brian Pellegrini and Brandon Barnes combined to go 6-for-11 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and six runs scored. The Quakes took control of the game from the outset. Rancho Cucamonga scored five runs in the opening frame off JetHawks starter Kyle Greenwalt and added an unearned run in the second to open up a 6-0 lead.
After Barnes belted a solo home run in the bottom of the second, the Quakes tacked on three more runs in the top of the third, which made it a 9-1 contest.
But Lancaster answered with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single from Pellegrini and a two-run single from Barnes, which reduced the Quakes' lead to 9-4.
The Quakes added two more runs in the top of the fifth before Lancaster exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the frame. Albert Cartwright smacked a solo home run to start the frame. After Pellegrini drew a walk, Lee Cruz reached on a throwing error by Quakes third basemen Luis Jimenez. John Curtis hit an RBI single and Barry Butera followed with an RBI double. Andy Simunic crushed his first home run with Lancaster - and the second of his professional career- over the left field wall to chase Quakes starter Ryan Chaffee from the contest. Lancaster tacked on three more runs off Jose Perez to claim a 13-11 lead.
The JetHawks added five more runs in the bottom of the seventh, three of which came on Barnes' second homer of the night, to seal the victory.
Ashton Mowdy (2-3) earned the win in relief for Lancaster. Perez (0-1) took the loss for Rancho Cucamonga.
With the win, the JetHawks improved to 6-10 in the second half and 29-57. Rancho Cucamonga fell to 9-7 and 48-38 overall.
The JetHawks will travel to San Bernardino to begin a three-game series with the Inland Empire 66ers Saturday. Dodgers All-Star outfielder Manny Ramirez and reserve catcher Brad Ausmus are expected to be in the lineup for the 66ers on rehab assignments. Lancaster will start right-hander Leandro Cespedes (0-3, 5.46 ERA). The 66ers are expected to counter with right-hander Ethan Martin (9-6, 4.56 ERA).
