Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lancaster, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes blew a huge lead on Friday night, as the Lancaster JetHawks rallied from a 9-1 deficit, defeating the Quakes by a score of 18-12 at the Hangar in Lancaster.
A nine-run fifth inning put the JetHawks ahead to stay, as Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee and reliever Jose Perez had a difficult trek through the bottom of the fifth.
Leading 11-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Chaffee surrendered a lead-off homer to Albert Cartwright, his ninth of the year, making it 11-5. After a walk to Brian Pellegrini, Lee Cruz hit a ground ball to Luis Jimenez at third base. Jimenez's throw to second pulled second baseman Kevin Ramos off the bag, in what turned out to be a critical error. After Chaffee earned the next two outs, three consecutive JetHawks reached via a hit, including a three-run homer from Andy Simunic, as Lancaster pulled to within a run at 11-10.
Perez (0-1) came on and allowed the first three JetHawks to reach. After Cartwright doubled home the tying run, Perez allowed a two-run homer to Pellegrini, as the JetHawks took the lead for good at 13-11.
The JetHawks added five more in the seventh against Perez, taking a commanding 18-11 lead. Brandon Barnes capped the five-run frame with a three-run blast to right field, his second of the night.
The Quakes capped the scoring in the eighth, as Luis Jimenez doubled and scored on Gabe Jacobo's RBI single, making it 18-12. That would be as close as the Quakes would get though, as they saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Rancho Cucamonga built a huge lead early, taking a 5-0 first-inning lead and holding a 9-1 advantage over JetHawks' starter Kyle Greenwalt in the top of the third.
Ricky Alvarez, in his first game with the Quakes since being called up from Cedar Rapids, hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat and finished the game with two hits.
Rian Kiniry also had a big night offensively, with three hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
JetHawks' reliever Ashton Mowdy (2-3) was credited with the win in relief.
The Quakes (9-7, 48-38) return home on Saturday night, opening up a three-game series against High Desert at The Epicenter. Matt Shoemaker (6-6) takes on Andrew Carraway (5-5) of the Mavs in the series-opener at 7:05pm.
July 10th is Millennium Systems Fireworks Night, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Display, thanks to Millennium Systems and KOLA 99.9. Saturday night will also feature a special jersey auction, as the Quakes help to raise awareness for Autism. Proceeds of the jersey auction will benefit the Autism Society Inland Empire. Game time is 7:05pm and gates open at 6:05pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
