Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(SAN BERNARDINO, CA) - The crowd in San Bernardino was filled with people wearing number 99, eager to watch 12-time All-Star Manny Ramirez make a rare California League appearance. Instead, it was the JetHawks Leandro Cespedes who stole the show, striking out Ramirez twice as the JetHawks won the first game of the road series 5-3 Saturday night against Inland Empire.
Ramirez, nursing a strained hamstring that has him on the disabled list for the Los Angeles Dodgers, hit in the lead-off spot for the 66ers. Cespedes struck him out looking with fastball in the first and second innings. Ramirez swung at a 3-0 pitch in the fifth inning and grounded the ball back to Cespedes for an out before leaving the game. Dodgers catcher Brad Ausmus, also playing on a rehabilitation assignment, singled three times.
The JetHawks took the lead in the first inning. Jay Austin walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Albert Cartwright. Cartwright then stole second and came across on a sacrifice fly from Lee Cruz.
Inland Empire tied the score with two runs in the second inning, the only runs they would get off Cespedes over his six innings. Lancaster resumed the lead in the third on a RBI ground out by Cruz and led the rest of the way. Cruz scored himself on a RBI double by Brandon Barnes in the sixth. Andy Simunic added a double in the ninth to finish the scoring for Lancaster.
Cespedes earned his first win of the season with his first quality start. Shane Wolf turned in two shutout innings of relief. Closer David Berner got into trouble in the ninth inning, allowing a run and loading the bases. Brian Wabick came out of the bullpen and got the final out for his first save of the season.
The JetHawks will go for their first three-game winning streak since May when they battle the 66ers Sunday evening in San Bernardino. Ross Seaton (3-9) will pitch for the JetHawks against Inland Empire's Jon Michael Redding (3-6). The game begins at 6:05. The game will be broadcast starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:00 on CSN@JetHawks.com and NewsTalk 1380.
