Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks inched closer to a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over the Dayton Gems Tuesday night at Independence Events Center. Forward Mike Berry scored two goals in the victory and goaltender Gerry Festa stopped 29 of 30 shots by the Gems. Todd Griffith would extend his point streak to eight games with two assists in the effort.
The Mavericks went on the offensive early, getting a goal from Mike Berry just two and a half minutes into the game. Todd Griffith ensured his point streak would be extended to eight games with an assist on the goal. Defenseman Steven Later was also given an assist on the goal. The Mavericks outshot the Gems 13-8 in the period. Fighting majors to Cole Ruwe and former Maverick Kyle Bochek were the only penalty minutes distributed in the period.
Missouri went nearly the entire second period without scoring, until the 16:43 mark when Nathan O'Nabigon took a pass in the slot from Toby Lafrance and beat Jeff Jakaitis through the five-hole. The goal put the Mavericks up 2-0. Mike Berry was in the mix again as he tallied his second goal of the game with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second period on a beautiful toe-drag deke around a Dayton defender and Jakaitis. Todd Griffith notched his second assist of the game on the goal, as well. The Mavericks dominated the shot department in the period, outshooting Dayton 13-5 in the middle frame.
Dayton would draw closer in the third period, as Chris Lipsett scored at 9:33, bringing the Gems within two goals. Matt Miller and Damian Surma were given assists on the goal. The Gems would only get the one goal and the Mavericks would skate to the 3-1 victory.
Gerry Festa turned in another superb start, stopping 29 of 30 shots by Dayton. On the other end was Jakaitis, who stopped 30 of 33 shots by the Mavericks. No power play goals were scored in the game, as both teams went zero-for-four with man power advantages.
The Mavericks take on the Quad City Mallards in a home-and-home weekend series, starting on Friday night as the two teams face each other at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks then travel to Moline, Illinois for the second game on Saturday. Then on Sunday night, the Mavericks face Dayton on their home rink.
