Bucks Beat First-Place Allen, 5-2

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Allen Americans 5-2 Tuesday night at Laredo Energy Arena. With the win the Bucks move into a tie with Arizona for the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference as they improve to 20-28-7 (47 points).

Pier Pelletier stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced and Brian Matte scored two first period goals as the Bucks won their second straight game overall and their third straight at home.

The Bucks scored first for the third time in their last four games as they took a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Laredo took a 1-0 lead at the 6:50 mark of the first when Matte took a pass from Jeff Hazelwood from the behind the net and poked the puck into the empty net. Matte has scored a goal in three straight games.

The Bucks increased their lead to 2-0 with 6:34 left in the first period when Matte re-directed David Inman's shot from the point to pick up his second goal of the night.

Allen (38-12-2) outshot Laredo 15-9 in the first period.

The Americans cut the Laredo lead to 2-1 just 1:48 into the second period when Nino Musitelli converted a turnover in the Bucks end and scored on a snap shot from the bottom of the right circle. The goal was Musitelli's 26th of the season.

The Bucks increased their lead to 3-1 with 7:16 left in the second when Hans Benson picked up the puck at the boards and found a wide open Reid Edmondson in front of the net who flipped in his 10th goal of the season. Edmondson has a goal in two of the Bucks last four games.

Allen outshot Laredo 10-9 in the second period.

Jonathan Zion cut the Bucks lead to 3-2 when he scored from the point on the power-play at the 7:52 mark of the third. The goal was Zion's fourth of the season.

The Bucks would go up 4-2 with 8:51 left in the third when Daniel Koger scored from the left circle on a two-on-one break. The goal was Koger's team-leading 25th of the season.

Joe Scali added an empty-net goal with 56 seconds left to make it 5-2 Bucks.

The Bucks were outshot 8-7 in the third period and 33-25 in the game.

Chris Whitley suffered his first-ever regulation loss against the Buck as he stopped 20 of 24 shots. Whitley is now 9-1 all-time in the regular season against the Bucks.

The Bucks will head out on a two-game road trip this weekend playing at Bossier-Shreveport on Friday and Texas on Saturday.

BUCKS MAKE IR MOVES

Prior to Tuesday's game the Bucks activated Darryl Smith from the 10-day IR, placed Aaron Boogaard on the 10-day IR and moved Adam Rivet from the 30-day to season ending IR.

Smith missed the Bucks last 18 games after suffering a lower-body injury on January 21st in Tulsa. Smith has 18 points (8-1018) in 28 games with the Bucks this season.

Boogaard was scratched from Sunday's 6-5 overtime win over Arizona with an upper-body injury. Boogaard is second on the Bucks with 172 PIM's and has seven points (2-57) in 52 games.

Rivet suffered an upper-body injury on February 4th in Arizona. Rivet had eight points (0-88) in 12 games with the Bucks this season.
