Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - For the third time in a week, the Stockton Ports lost on runs scored in the late innings. Leading 2-0 heading into the eighth, the Ports saw the High Desert Mavericks score six runs over the final two frames to steal the first game of a three-game series by a final of 6-2.
Hits were at a premium for most of the night as the teams combined for just five hits through the first seven innings. The Ports had just one hit over five and it drove in the first run of the game. With two on and one out in the second, John Nogowski hit a double down the right field line that scored Joe Bennie and gave the Ports a 1-0 lead. High Desert starter Collin Wiles went on to retire the next 11 consecutive batters following the double. Wiles' streak ended when James Harris led off the sixth inning with a home run to right to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Wiles would be rendered a no-decision as he went six innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out four.
Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs was also stingy in the contest. Friedrichs pitched around an error and a base hit with two outs in the second, a one-out double in the third and a one-out walk in the fourth. Friedrichs would go on to retire the final eight batters he faced and would leave with the opportunity to pick up the win but received a no-decision. He went six scoreless innings and allowed two hits while walking one and striking out three.
Zack Erwin (3-10) took over in the seventh and was able to work around a leadoff walk. In the eighth, Erwin gave up three straight singles to Josh Morgan, Michael De Leon and Scott Heineman, with Heineman's driving in Morgan to make it a 2-1 game. With runners at the corners, Erwin made an errant pick-off throw to first that allowed De Leon to score from third and tie the game at 2-2.
High Desert would surge for four runs off of Erwin in the ninth. Travis Demeritte led off with a single and, two batters later, Jose Cardona doubled to put runners at second and third. After Morgan was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, De Leon provided a sac-fly to left that gave the Mavericks their first lead at 3-2. Heineman followed with a two-run triple to right. Two batters later with two outs, Luke Tendler doubled to right to score Heineman and give the Mavericks a 6-2 advantage.
Erwin suffered the loss, going two-and-two-thirds innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out two.
Felix Carvallo (5-1), who came on in relief of Wiles to begin the seventh, shut the Ports out over three innings on his way to picking up the victory.
The Ports and Mavericks play the middle game of their three-game series on Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark. Heath Fillmyer (5-6, 3.60 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Adam Quintana (3-3, 4.14 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
