Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Johnny Sewald hit a three-run homer to highlight an eight-run third inning for the JetHawks, as they held off the San Jose Giants to take the series opener, 10-9, on Wednesday night at The Hangar.
The JetHawks fell behind early 5-0 after San Jose put up a single run in the second and four in the top of the third. They immediately responded with eight in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not relinquish. Sewald 's home run, his third of the season with Lancaster, made it 5-4 Giants. He later drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice-fly.
Jamie Ritchie and Brooks Marlow each delivered RBI singles and Drew Ferguson came through with a two-run double. The JetHawks sent 11 men to the plate in the frame and chased San Jose starter Jason Forjet (8-7) from the game. Lancaster also took advantage of a pair of errors by the Giants in the inning. San Jose committed four errors on the night.
The JetHawks led 10-6 heading into the fifth inning, but San Jose put up three runs to creep with a run. It turned out to be the final scoring of the contest. Christian Paulino, who led the Giants with three hits and three RBI, delivered a two-run double. Ty Ross had an RBI single.
San Jose 's best threat in the remainder of the game came in the seventh. With runners on first and third and one out, Jacob Dorris was summoned from the bullpen. He retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a fielder 's choice grounder. The right-hander went on to close out the game and secure his sixth save in as many opportunities. He struck out four and allowed only one hit.
Scott Weathersby (3-4) picked up the win in relief for Lancaster. He allowed three runs in 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Bobby Boyd reached four times with three hits and a walk. Ramon Laureano and Jamie Ritchie each recorded a pair of hits.
The JetHawks and Giants continue their four-game series on Thursday night at The Hangar with a doubleheader. Trent Thornton (5-4) and Rogelio Armenteros (5-2) will start for Lancaster against Phil Bickford (2-0) and Jordan Johnson (6-6).
First pitch for game one is 5:05 p.m.
