Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Bakersfield Blaze made one mistake on defense, and despite a pair of towering solo homers on the offensive side, the Modesto Nuts capitalized for one big inning, holding off the red hot home team, sending the Blaze to a rare defeat, 5-3, on Wednesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The early portion of the game was a bit of a struggle for Eddie Campbell. Eddie allowed just a solo homer in the 2nd inning over the first three frames, stranding six Nuts baserunners in the process.

But a key pair of errors in the 4th forced Campbell off the high wire, and a four run frame pushed Modesto to five runs, two earned.

Meanwhile, the Blaze went on an every-other-inning minimalist scoring barrage, plating one run in the 1st, 3rd and 5th innings. Chantz Mack singled home Drew Jackson for the first run, and solo homers from Justin Seager and Austin Wilson accounted for the others.

Isaac Sanchez turned in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, but Modesto's Jack Wynkoop was excellent through 6.0 innings, as well.

And that's how the contest would conclude. Darin Gillies worked two spotless innings of his own for the Blaze, but the Nuts' combination of Troy Neiman and Luis Niebla (S, 3) posted three zeroes on the lower half of the scoreboard, and the Blaze fell in the series opener, 5-3.

Oddly enough, while the Blaze remain 15-5 in the second half and well ahead of the competition for first place, all five losses have come in series openers.

The series and homestand continue on Thursday in another of the Blaze Throwback Thursday series giveaways. This week, it's the neon 2000-era Blaze logo jersey to the first 1,000 fans in the stadium. Gates open at 6:45pm and fans are encouraged to arrive early to claim their goodie.
