Kansas City Mavericks News Release
BOSSIER CITY, Louisiana - The Missouri Mavericks overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-3 Saturday night at CenturyTel Center. Missouri forward Tommy Lange had a pair of goals and Jeff MacDermid had a goal and two assists as the Mavericks scored five unanswered goals for their 14th win of the season. Missouri had five goals in the final two periods and only allowed five total shots to the Mudbugs in the final 40 minutes of play. The teams will both head to Independence to square off on Tuesday, January 5th at Independence Events Center.
"I personally challenged ever player after the first period, and every single one of them responded," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Those were two huge points for us."
Missouri (14-15-2) has 30 points on the season and sits in sixth place in the Northern Conference. The Mavericks are just five points below the Mudbugs who are in third place in the North.
It was a tale of two games as the Mudbugs controlled the first period and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Justin Aikens, David Rutherford and Jeff Kyrzakos scored goals just 3:47 apart to give Bossier-Shreveport a commanding lead. The Mudbugs had 14 shots in the first and controlled the pace throughout the opening 20 minutes.
After the first intermission, the Mavericks came out like a different team. MacDermid scored against his former team and made it 3-1 on his ninth goal of the season at the 8:13 mark. Lange's first of two goals made it a one-goal game while the Mavericks were on the power play. He was assisted by MacDermid and Bill Vandermeer. The goal came with just 1:44 remaining in the second period, and the Mavericks were within one goal heading into the final period.
It was all Missouri in the third period as they concluded their comeback. Vandermeer ripped a power play shot past Mudbugs goaltender John DeCaro at the 7:01 mark to tie the game at three. He was assisted by Nick Sirota and Jeff Christian, and the assist for Christian extended his scoring streak to seven games.
Lange earned the game winner and netted his second goal of the night when he chipped a puck over the shoulder of DeCaro at the 13:30 mark. Finally, at the 16:24 mark, Sirota scored his 10th goal of the season and made it a 5-3 final.
Missouri outshot Bossier-Shreveport 23-5 in the final two periods and scored five goals. The Mavericks finished with two power play goals going 2-7 on the power play and killed all six of the Mudbugs' power play chances.
The Mavericks will host three games next week when they take on the Mudbugs on Tuesday, January 5, and they will host the Arizona Sundogs for a pair of games on January 8 and 9. For tickets call (866) 443-8849 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
