RiverKings Power By Oilers in Tulsa

TULSA, OK --- Nathan Schwartzbauer's rebound goal in the third period and Matt Pierce's empty-netter sealed a 5-3 Mississippi RiverKings victory over the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday night, January 2nd in Tulsa.

The win was the RiverKings' second straight victory and stopped a three-game winning streak by the Oilers.

Mississippi also moved into a tie for third place in the Central Hockey League Northern Conference standings with the win.

Tulsa took the early lead on a goal from former RiverKings Aaron Davis with four and a half-minutes gone in the first period.

But the RiverKings answered with a pair of power play goals from Andrew Lackner and Kevin Truelson for a 2-1 lead after one period of play.

Lackner scored his second goal of the season and first power play tally on assists from Ryan Held and David Simoes with just over five minutes left in the frame.

Truelson answered with his third goal of the year and second with the RiverKings, also on the power play from Derek Landmesser and Matt Summers with just over a minute and a half left in the first frame.

In the second period, Tulsa tied the game on a power play goal from Tyler Butler with under five and a half minutes left in the period.

But Mississippi regained the lead with just 25 seconds left in the second period, as Matt Summers deflected a shot from the point by Landmesser for his sixth goal of the year and first power play goal. Ryan Held received the other assist on the red-lighter.

In the third period, Tulsa tied the game when Dan Riedel scored his seventh of the season at 4:17 However, the RiverKings kept the pressure and Schwartzbauer finally converted his second goal of the year, shooting a rebound of a shot from Held for the game-winning goal.

Pierce finished up the game with an unassisted, empty-net goal, Pierce's fourth of the season, with 41 seconds remaining for the final score.

Mississippi scored three times on six power play chances, while Tulsa scored once on the power play with five opportunities.

The RiverKings out shot the Oilers by a 40-21 margin and held Tulsa to only four shots on net in the final period.

Kevin Beech was the winning goaltender for the RiverKings, stopping 18 of 21 attempts, while Marty Magers took the loss for Tulsa after a 34-save performance.

Mississippi will next face CHL overall leader Odessa Friday night in Southaven, starting at 7:05 PM. It will be Elvis Night to celebrate the King of Rock and Roll.
