INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost 4-1 to the Wichita Thunder Saturday night at Independence Events Center. Dale Mahovsky scored the lone goal for Missouri and Charlie Effinger made 27 saves on 30 shots. The Mavericks now hit the road to Wichita to wrap up the back end of a home-and-home series with the Thunder tomorrow evening. The Mavericks wore special pink-themed jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness in association with Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Greater Kansas City.
The first period went without scores by either team. The Mavericks were unable to convert on two power play opportunities in the period and were outshot 11-9 by the Thunder in the period.
Wichita got on the board first with six minutes remaining in the second period on a goal from Dustin Donaghy The Thunder took a 1-0 lead into the locker room heading into the third period.
The Thunder doubled their lead five minutes into the third period on a power play goal from Matt Robinson. The Mavericks cut the Wichita lead in half with 10 minutes to go in regulation on a power play goal of their own from Dale Mahovsky. The Thunder responded with a two-on-one goal by Matt Robinson through the legs of Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger with less than five minutes to go in regulation. Wichita added an empty netter at the end of regulation to finalize the score at 4-1.
