Allen Americans News Release
Fort Wayne, Indiana - Saturday night saw a battle of second place teams in identical positions when the Allen Americans concluded their two game north eastern road set with a contest against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Komets are currently in 2nd place in the Turner Conference, four points behind the first place Evansville Icemen while the Americans rank 2nd in the Berry Conference, four points behind the Wichita Thunder. This was the first time the clubs have met since Fort Wayne joined the Central Hockey League when the IHL merged with the league.
The first period was action packed with plenty of shots for both teams but neither club was able to light the lamp, so the game remained scoreless at the end of the opening period. The Komets led in the shots on goal category 18-15 and both teams were 0-1 on the power play.
The second period saw more great action at both ends of the ice and it wouldn't be until late in the frame that the scoreless tie would be broken. Colton Yellow Horn scored his 21st goal of the season, off an assist by Matt Register at 16:46 of the middle stanza. Both teams were 0-2 on the power play with Allen outshooting the Komets 10-7 in the period to bring the shots on goal level at 25-25 through two periods of play.
In the third period, the Americans extended their lead to 2-0 off a goal by Trevor Hendrikx at the 5:55 mark; assists were credited to Nick Layton and Jeff Martens. The Komets answered back less than four minutes later when Jamie Lovell fired a shot past Marco Cousineau, assisted by Bobby Chaumont at 9:24 of the third period. A late game penalty on the Americans gave the Komets a last second chance and it became a literal one when Chris Auger poked a loose puck past a prone Marco Cousineau in the Americans crease at the 20:00 mark. After a long conference amongst the officials, the goal stood and two tenths of a second were added back onto the clock. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 2-2 with the Komets outshooting Allen 17-9 in the third period for a three period total of 42-34 in Fort Wayne's favor.
The shootout was as intense as the previous 65 minutes of play for the second night in a row and once again the Allen Americans would emerge victorious. Goal scorers for Fort Wayne were Frankie DeAngelis and Artem Podshendyalov, for Allen it was Colton Yellow Horn and Nick Layton before Joshua Hepditch would score the game winning goal in the 8th shootout round. Marco Cousineau gets his second victory in two nights for the Americans, stopping 42 of 44 shots in another stellar performance.
The Americans now head home to take on the Texas Brahmas Tuesday night; the puck drop is scheduled for 7:05PM.
