Mavs earn 13-2 blowout win

September 5, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavs scored seven times in the fifth inning to highlight a big night at the plate and received some solid pitching as well to equal a 13-2 blowout win in Lake Elsinore Saturday night.

On the first pitch of the second inning, Johermyn Chavez blasted a home run--just his second in 20 games--to put the Mavs ahead.

They scored twice more in the inning. Kuo Hui Lo had a sac fly, and Luis Nunez also provided a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Storm were able to get two runs back in their next at bat. With none on and two out, Robert Lara walked, and Bo Davis followed with a homer pull Lake Elsinore within 3-2.

The game remained a one-run affair until the Mavs hung seven on the board in the fifth. The Storm committed errors on the first two plays of the inning to help the Mavs plate a run.

With two on and none out, Kyle Seager blasted a homer over the 40- foot high fence in right field to give the Mavs a 7=2 lead.

Jake Shaffer and Trevor Coleman each collected RBI singles, and Luis Nunez brought the final run home on a fielder's choice to give the Mavs a commanding 10-2 lead.

Unlike recent games, the Mavs pitching staff never let the Storm get back in the game. Nate Reed complimented the explosion in the top of the fifth with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.

It was a nice way for Reed (1-1) to end his night, as he earned his first win with the Mavs. Reed allowed two runs over five innings on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

The Storm only had two hits past the second and actually never had a runner in scoring position all night.

The Mavs added to an already great night in the ninth, when Shaver Hansen connected on a three-run homer to finish the scoring.

Chavez led the Mavs with three hits had two attempts to complete the cycle, needing a double. However, he grounded out in the sixth and drew a walk in the ninth.

Storm pitcher Jeremy McBryde had trouble pitching against the Mavs once again, surrendering nine runs--seven earned--over four-plus innings. McBryde (4-4) gave up eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.

In addition the Mavericks win, Rancho Cucmonga lost 12-5 in Lancaster, pulling the Mavs one game within first place with two games remaining.

The win also ended a 10-game losing streak on Saturdays.

The Mavs face the Storm Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 4:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
