Mavericks Walloped Again

June 27, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

One day after putting up 14 runs and 20 hits, the Inland Empire hitting machine kept on chugging, piling up 14 runs and 16 hits in a 14-2 blowout at Mavericks Stadium Sunday evening.

The 66ers had relied on home runs on Saturday, but on Sunday they used several lenghty rallies and preyed on Mavericks miscues to score.

The Mavericks pitching staff walk three batters and hit three others. The defense committed a season-high four errors as well.

The 66ers took advantage of the Mavericks subpar play on several occasions. With two on and one out in the second, Austin Gallagher hit an RBI single. Rich Poythress had an errant relay throw on the play, allowing another run to score.

Two more scored on a similar play the next inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Steven Caseres sent a week ground ball to first. Poythress threw to second to try and start a double play, but Edilio Colina's throw went wild as well and the 66ers led 4-0.

A Chris Gutierrez two-out RBI double in the fourth put Inland Empire up 5-0. The Mavs got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer by Denny Almonte.

The 66ers blew the game open, scoring nine runs over the sixth and seventh. Five scored in the sixth when the 66ers collected six hits.

Four more followed in the seventh. With two on and one out, Johan Garcia sent what appeared to be an ideal double play ball to second, but the ball took a terrible hop and went into the outfield for an RBI single.

The fortunate bounce opened the door for three more runs score, including a two-run homer by Scott Van Slyke.

The Mavs only other run scored on a solo homer by Johermyn Chavez.

Despite all the offense, 66ers starting pitcher Will Savage didn't need it. Making his Cal League debut, Savage (1-0) rolled through the Mavericks lineup over seven strong innings. He allowed two runs and five hits, striking out five with no walks.

Maikel Cleto continued to struggle on the mound for the Mavericks, earning a third straight loss while giving up five runs in 4.2 innings. Cleto (1-3) allowed six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

After having to settle for a split against the 66ers, the Mavs will begin a six-game road trip Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Rancho Cucamonga. Live coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
