High Desert Mavericks News Release

One day after playing a pair of close, low-scoring games, the Mavericks and 66ers bats both had big nights Saturday, with Inland Empire outdoing the Mavs 14-10 at Mavericks Stadium.

The 66ers hit a season-best six homers, including two by Steven Caseres. They also notched 20 hits for the second time this year in a game at Mavericks Stadium.

Both teams were trading runs early on. The 66ers scored on an error in the first inning, and Eddy Martinez-Esteve tied the game for the Mavs in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single.

Matt Wallach hit the first homer of the night with a solo shot in the second to regain the lead for Inland Empire. The Mavs went up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning after an RBI double by Blake Ochoa and a sac fly by Kyle Seager.

The 66ers then outscored the Mavs 11-1 over the next few innings. With two outs in the fourth, Caseres a three-run homer to make it 5-3 and put the 66ers in the lead for good.

Pedro Baez hit an RBI single in the fifth, and four more runs scored with two outs in the sixth. Travis Denker collected an RBI triple before Baez and Scott Van Slyke hit back-to-back homers to give the 66ers a 10-3 lead.

Johermyn Chavez hit the Mavericks only homer in the bottom of the inning, but Alfredo Silverio connected on a three-run shot in the seventh to make it 13-4.

The Mavs refused to go down quietly, scoring six unanswered runs to make it a game again. Martinez-Esteve hit a two-run single in the seventh. Kyle Seager and Jake Shaffer each brought in a pair of runs in the eighth to pull the Mavs within 13-10.

On the first pitch of the ninth, Caseres hit his second homer to put the 66ers back up by four. The Mavs ran out of gas, and went down in order in their final at-bat.

Mavericks All-Star pitcher Kenn Kasparek was not his usual self, suffering his first loss since April 19. Kasparek (6-2) allowed six runs and nine hits over a season-low 4.1 innings.

Jon Michael Redding didn't have a spectacular night, but he used the abundant run support to earn the win. Redding (3-5) allowed five runs and eight hits over 5.1 innings.

The Mavs will look to take three of four from the 66ers when they meet Sunday at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
