San Jose Giants News Release

Charlie Culberson homered and collected four RBI's and Craig Westcott maintained his perfect record as the San Jose Giants earned a 9-5 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Giants pounded out 12 hits in the contest to salvage the final game of the four-game series. With the victory, San Jose improves their overall record to 46-28.

Culberson (2-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) hit his 10th home run of the season as part of a four-run bottom of the first inning rally. Juan Perez (2-for-4, 2B, SB), Ehire Adrianza (2-for-5, 2B, RBI, SB), Drew Biery (2-for-4, RBI) and Wendell Fairley (2-for-4, SB) also contributed two hits apiece. Francisco Peguero (0-for-4, 3 RBI) drove home three runs without the benefit of a hit.

Westcott (6-0) worked the first five innings on the mound and surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits. The right-hander walked one and struck out five.

The Giants took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Perez began the frame with a double off the fence in deep left center. Adrianza then reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners before Peguero hit a ground ball to first base that was fielded by Ben Paulsen, however the throw home was late in an attempt to retire Perez as San Jose jumped ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Culberson lined a pitch from Nuts starter Ethan Hollingsworth over the fence in left for a three-run homer and a 4-0 Giants advantage.

San Jose moved in front by a 5-0 margin in the bottom of the third as Biery delivered a one-out, RBI single into left center.

Westcott began his outing with three scoreless innings facing just one batter over the minimum. In the top of the fourth, Tim Wheeler led off with a single before Paulsen singled with one out to put runners on first and second. After Thomas Field struck out, Jimmy Cesario and Ryan Peisel delivered back-to-back RBI singles to bring Modesto to within 5-2. It marked the first two hits that Westcott had allowed this season with runners in scoring position and two outs.

The Giants got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Perez led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Peguero's groundout to shortstop.

In the top of the fifth, a leadoff walk and a one-out single from Wheeler put a pair of runners on base. A passed ball charged to catcher Johnny Monell allowed the first run of the inning to score while with two outs, Paulsen hit a grounder to third that was mishandled by Biery for an error to plate Wheeler to make it 6-4.

Kyle Woodruff (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) relieved Westcott to begin the top of the sixth and initially struggled as Cesario led off with a single before Peisel walked to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate. However, Woodruff struck out Brian Rike before Erik Wetzel popped out and Scott Robinson struck out to end the threat.

The Giants then went back ahead by five runs with a long rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Fairley singled before Perez drew a walk. Adrianza then greeted new pitcher Stephen Dodson with an RBI double down the right field line before Peguero's sacrifice fly extended the lead to 8-4. Two batters later, Culberson lined a single into right field to plate Adrianza for a 9-4 advantage.

Woodruff worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh before Brian Anderson (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) surrendered an unearned run in the eighth. Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then fired a perfect top of the ninth to seal the victory.

Hollingsworth (5-6), a California League All-Star, suffered the loss after yielding a season-high eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
