Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts completed a three game sweep of the Mid-Missouri Mavericks on Friday night at Hawkinson Ford Field with a 5-1 victory.
The Mavericks jumped ahead early as they nipped ThunderBolt starter Felix Matta for a run in the top of the second. Leftfielder John Wright clubbed a double to left and advanced to third on a bunt single by shortstop Thomas Bowker. Designated hitter Ashley Farr hit a sacrifice fly to bring Wright across the plate for the early 1-0 advantage.
The ThunderBolts retaliated in the bottom half of the inning. Leftfielder Scott Balster moved designated hitter Kasey Wilson to third and first baseman Brian Baker to second after they drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Wilson scored on a stinging single to left by catcher Michael Lynch.
With a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning, Windy City added some insurance runs. Shortstop Ja'mar Clanton took advantage of a dropped ball in the infield to reach first. Second baseman Clemente Bonilla continued his hot hitting as he slammed a double down the leftfield line. Clanton came around to score. Bonilla swiped third with third baseman Matt Ferrara at the plate. Following a walk to Ferrara, rightfielder Nick Johnson drove Bonilla home on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Matta went six innings for the ThunderBolts to earn the win. Matta surrendered just one run on three hits while walking one and fanning two. Lefty Justin Roelle tossed two innings of scoreless relief and right-hander Steve Ziroli threw a shutout ninth. Taking the loss for the Mavericks was starter Augustine Rodriguez as he dished out three runs on five hits over five and one-third innings.
The Rockford RiverHawks come to town for a three game set this weekend. Saturday's game time is 7:05pm. Gates will open at 5:05pm for the Community Salute, a ceremony honoring local veterans which will take place at 6:05pm.
