Richmond Roosters News Release

Lorain, Ohio – The Roosters walked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and lost 5-4 in dramatic fashion to the Redcoats on Thursday night. Richmond put a quick run on the board in the top of the first when Josh Hollingsworth singled to left to score Mike Reese from second and give the Roosters an early 1-0 lead.

The Redcoats matched the Roosters in the bottom of the second by getting one run on triple over the head of center fielder Mike Reese, and another on a fielding error from Joe Rhomberg at third base to take a 2-1 lead after one full inning. The Roosters got it back to even in the top of the third when Ty Herriott scored Mike Reese from first on a double. The score was 2-2 after 2 ½ innings.

Mike Reese continued his hot hitting this season by going 4-for-5 in the game and contributing to the offense. He doubled in the top of the fifth and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kevin White for a 3-2 Richmond lead. Josh Hollingsworth gave the Roosters a two run lead at 4-2 when he stole home plate in the same inning.

Ohio Valley evened the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs off a couple hits and an error to tie it at 4-4. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth when Jason Boyd led off for the Redcoats with a double off Dan Caldwell. Boyd then made it to third on a questionable call after a bunt moved him over. Caldwell intentionally walked the bases loaded with no outs to create a force play at home, then proceeded to strike out the next two batters before walking in the winning run for Ohio Valley.

Tony Casoli started for the Roosters and, aside from give up two runs in both the second and sixth innings, pitched well. He finished with ten strikeouts while giving up six hits over 6 2/3 innings. Dan Caldwell (0-1) took the loss for Richmond and Justin Gerlach (1-0) got the win for the Redcoats. Ohio Valley starter Tom Cochran also pitched well for his team, giving up only four runs over seven innings.

The Roosters (2-6) will try to avoid the sweep on Friday night in the final game against Ohio Valley (4-4) before heading to Chillicothe for three games starting Saturday. Curt Moenter (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who pitched five shutout innings in his first start, will get the start for Richmond. Ty Kline (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will start for Ohio Valley.
