Mavericks Storm Back with Five-Goal Third to Take Game 1 over Tahoe

Independence, MO - The Kansas City Mavericks erupted for five goals in the third period to surge past the Tahoe Knight Monsters 6-3 on Sunday afternoon, claiming Game 1 of the Mountain Division Finals at Cable Dahmer Arena.

Kansas City came out strong, outshooting Tahoe 23-12 in the first period, but both goaltenders held firm. The opening frame remained scoreless despite the Mavericks generating several high-danger chances.

Tahoe opened the scoring at 6:26 of the second, as Sloan Stanick buried a rebound to give the Knight Monsters a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks were limited to just six shots in the frame and entered the second intermission trailing by one.

The Mavericks exploded in the third with five goals to rally past Tahoe. Casey Carreau tied the game just 46 seconds into the period. After Tahoe briefly retook the lead at 2:47, Justin MacPherson sniped one home over goaltender Jesper Vikman at 5:48to even the score at 2-2.

Tahoe responded again, this time at 11:15, when Jett Jones found the back of the net to make it 3-2 Knight Monsters.

The Mavericks answered once more. At 12:31, Cam Morrison powered his way through defenders and set up Damien Giroux for a tap-in to tie the game 3-3. Marcus Crawford then gave Kansas City its first lead with a sharp-angle snipe at 16:18, making it 4-3.

Cade Borchardt sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:05, giving Kansas City a 5-3 victory and a 1-0 series lead in the Mountain Division Finals.

Jack LaFontaine made 34 saves to secure the win. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is set for Monday, May 5 at 7:05 PM at Cable Dahmer Arena.
