INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks lost 3-1 to the Arizona Sundogs Friday night at Independence Events Center in front of a sellout crowd of 5,800 fans. The Mavericks also welcomed their 500,000th fan through the turnstiles in franchise history on Friday.
Arizona grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Missouri with a goal from Tyler Butler at the 6:50 mark of the opening period. The Mavs continued to showcase their improved special teams play, as Ed McGrane knotted the score at 1-1 seven and a half minutes later on a power play goal. The period ended in a 1-1 tie, with Arizona outshooting Missouri 11-9 in the period.
The Sundogs scored the lone goal in the second period, when former Maverick Nathan O'Nabigon slapped home a loose rebound in the slot, giving the Sundogs the 2-1 lead heading into the final period. Arizona dominated Missouri in shots, outshooting Missouri 16-9 in the period.
The Mavs were unable to solve Arizona goaltender Mike Spillane in the final period and allowed an empty net goal in the final minute of regulation, sealing the 3-1 victory for the Sundogs.
Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger finished the night with 38 saves on 40 shots by the Sundogs. The Mavs close out their season series with Arizona with a 5-1-0 record against the Sundogs and now stand at 5-2-1 all-time against them.
