Mavericks Score Early and Often, Coast to Win

The Mavs scored 10 runs and collected 12 hits in the first three innings, guiding the way to a 12-5 blowout over Inland Empire Thursday night in San Bernardino.

Kyle Seager wasted no time to open the scoring, hitting a home run on the game first pitch. The Mavs loaded the bases with none out, and Jake Shaffer brought in another run with an RBI single. A double- play ball scored the final run of the inning to make it 3-0.

The Mavs doubled the lead with one swing the second. With bases loaded and two outs, Rich Poythress stroked a bases-clearing double to give the Mavs an early six-run lead.

They outdid themselves in the third, scoring four more. times. Shaver Hansen collected an RBI single, and Seager also came through with an RBI double.

Poythress found himself at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs once again. He doubled for the second time, plating two more runs and putting the Mavs in double digits.

Inland Empire would cash in after they loaded the bases in the fourth. Dustin Yount brought home a couple of runs, and Johan Garcia followed with a sac fly to make it 10-3.

The Mavs would get two of those runs back in the fifth. A wild pitch scored Trevor Coleman, and Shaffer had another RBI single.

That was the final time the Mavs scored, but it was more than enough. The Mavs finished with eight extra-base hits, and had eight players collect at least two hits. Edilio Colina led the team with three hits and scored three runs. In addition to driving in two runs, Seager scored four times as well.

The 66ers scored twice in the eighth, but never really threatened to piece together a big comeback.

Maverick pitcher Maikel Cleto snapped a four-game losing streak and earned his first win in his last six starts. Cleto (4-8) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing all three runs in the fourth. He gave up five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Inland Empire's Jon Michael Redding got torched and left in the middle of the third. In just 2.2 innings, Redding (4-9) allowed nine runs and 10 hits. He walked one and struck out one each.
